Paint in Watercolour’s first single in nearly 30 years, Guitar Shinjū is biting, acerbic, and almost unbearably sarcastic in its tone, yet it’s an absolute anthem, nonetheless. A song about not caring, not hoping, yet pushing forward nonetheless, endless waves of anger and melancholy propel the music forward. Its confidence and swagger somehow give the song an uplifting feeling.

The B-side, Gekijō Strange, is similarly fuzzy yet more cryptic and searching. Seemingly autobiographical at times, it’s reflective without caving into nostalgia. This is a combination of songs that is perfect for the beginning of a series of vinyl records that highlight bold, innovative cuts from independent artists that stand on their own.
