By many accounts, Paint in Watercolour were the first shoegaze band native to Japan to be signed to a major label, releasing their first full-length album Unknown after a string of fantastic singles and EPs. Whereas many bands in the ‘90s Japanese scene were chasing hazy textures and that My Bloody Valentine-esque sound, Paint in Watercolor seemed a Japanese answer to Britain’s Ride. Like Ride, they evolved Madchester dance rhythms and jangle pop toward a more guitar-focused, rock with just a touch of pop sound that veered toward psychedelia later in their career.

In 2022, original members Masato Nunokawa (Vocals/Guitars) and Kenichi Sekiguchi (Guitars) began rehearsing and recording new music. Their new single Guitar Shinju is the first of much more great new music the band is working on, charting a perfect evolution of the band’s sound while seeming so effortless it’s like they never stopped playing in ‘94.
